Canon EOS R50 Lens Compatibility: RF, RF-S, EF, EF-S, and Why EF-M Does Not Fit

Author:

The Canon EOS R50 uses the RF mount. Canon RF and RF-S lenses attach directly. EF and EF-S DSLR lenses can be used with a Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. EF-M lenses are not compatible.

RF lenses

Canon RF lenses mount directly on the R50. Many RF lenses are designed to cover a full-frame sensor, but they can also be used on the smaller APS-C sensor in the R50.

RF-S lenses

RF-S lenses are designed specifically for APS-C EOS R cameras and mount directly on the R50. They are often smaller and lighter than full-frame RF alternatives covering similar angles of view.

EF lenses

Canon EF DSLR lenses can be used with the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. The adapter maintains the correct flange distance and electronic connection for compatible Canon EF lenses.

EF-S lenses

Canon EF-S DSLR lenses can also be used with the Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. Because the R50 already has an APS-C sensor, EF-S image-circle coverage is a natural fit for the format.

What about EF-M lenses?

EF-M lenses from Canon’s EOS M mirrorless system are not supported on the RF mount and are excluded from Canon’s R50 compatibility list. The EF-EOS R adapter is for EF and EF-S DSLR lenses, not EF-M lenses.

Does a full-frame RF lens change focal length on the R50?

The physical focal length does not change. The R50’s APS-C sensor records a narrower field of view than a full-frame camera using the same focal length. Canon APS-C uses about a 1.6x crop factor for full-frame-equivalent framing comparisons.

For example, a 50mm lens on the R50 gives a field of view similar to about 80mm on a full-frame camera.
