Canon EOS R50 4K Recording Time: How Much Fits on 32GB, 128GB, and 512GB Cards?

Author:

The Canon EOS R50 can record 4K at several bitrates, so the amount of footage that fits on a card changes with the recording mode.

Normal 4K, IPB Standard

Canon lists normal 8-bit 4K IPB Standard at about 120 Mbps, or roughly 860 MB per minute.

Card capacity Canon estimate
32GB about 35 minutes
128GB about 2 hours 21 minutes
512GB about 9 hours 27 minutes

Normal 4K, IPB Light

Canon lists IPB Light at about 60 Mbps, or roughly 431 MB per minute.

Card capacity Canon estimate
32GB about 1 hour 10 minutes
128GB about 4 hours 43 minutes
512GB about 18 hours 52 minutes

HDR PQ uses more space

With HDR PQ enabled, Canon lists higher bitrates. Standard 4K HDR PQ is about 170 Mbps, while the Light option is about 85 Mbps.

For 128GB, Canon estimates about 1 hour 40 minutes for 4K HDR PQ Standard and about 3 hours 20 minutes for 4K HDR PQ Light.

Can the R50 record for all of that time in one clip?

No. Card capacity and maximum single-clip duration are different limits. Canon states that the EOS R50 can continuously record a movie for up to about one hour. A 128GB card can therefore hold multiple 4K clips totaling more than one hour even though one uninterrupted clip has a lower limit.

Why your real total may differ

Card formatting, audio and metadata, available free space, camera settings, and variable file behavior can change the real total. Canon’s numbers are the best planning baseline because they are tied to the camera’s actual recording modes.
